Zutin: Free Peoples Rebellion

Liberian accessories designer Sarah Williams has taken African fashion to a whole new high. I stumbled upon this jaw dropping line a couple of months ago (way before I started the blog) and I just had to share. According to http://www.fprebellion.com/ "Free Peoples Rebellion pays homage to the history of Liberia, which was founded and colonized by freed slaves in America who wanted to move back to Africa. It also describes the company's customer as well, someone who has a rebellious fashion sense and the free will to choose to make a difference. Partial proceeds from the accessory line are donated to youth organizations in Liberia".

I was only able to get these few pics to show, but if you are ready for more greatness visit the site here. Brace yourself...yeah its really that good!

LIB Music on the Rise

The first ever compilation of Liberian Music has been released to the world. HipCo (Liberian Hip Hop) artist Chief Boima presents "Lone Stars Vol. 1: HipCO& Gbema". Chief Boima worked with the African music association Akwaaba which is dedicated to African music and pop culture.

According to www.akwaabamusic.com "Hipco is hip hop sung in colloquial English, the form of English you hear on the streets of Liberia. Although colloquial English retains a lot of English syntax, it can be a bit daunting at first because it is spoken very fast, many consonants are not pronounced, and a lot of words are borrowed from other local languages. But it has become the language of choice for young rappers. And much like hip hop, hipco has grown into its own culture, with its own lifestyle, dance moves and music. Today hipco often refers to more than just a type of rap, it’s a way of life".

So, I am still having a hard time finding pictures of the Korto Momolu garments from the Sankofa Fashion Show held in Liberia back in May, but here is one with some of the designs. This pic is from a different show by the way. Below are some pics of some of the hairstyles that were used in the Liberia show. These were taken back stage. Enjoy!

Liberian Royalty

How fabulous is it the Africa's first perfumer is a Liberian? Model, beauty queen, and business woman Tammie Garr introduced her luxury fragrance Royalty to the world in 2010. According to Liberia Travel & Life Magazine the perfume "exudes self confidence, sensuality, and unquestionable seduction". Ingredients include vanilla, sandalwood, jasmine, and lilies. I'm def interested in purchasing, if my nose agrees. Has anyone out there tried it?

Just to give everybody a heads up "zutin" is a word Liberians use that basically means "stuntin" fashion wise, hence the reason all of my fashion posts will be titled Zutin.

With that said, during Fashion Week (and Fashion Month) I search high and low on all of my favorite fashion blogs for the Korto Momolu (Liberian Project Runway contestant and fashion designer that put us on the fashion map) Spring 2012 Collection. To my surprise it was nowhere to be found. For all of you out there that haven't had a chance to see it yet this is my gift to you.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Momolu when she graced Liberia in May of this year. She showcased designs for The Sankofa Fashion Show hosted by Amani Liberia. I haven't seen any of the designs from that show on her website, but I am on a mission of finding them for you to see. Until next post click here to see the rest of the Korto Momolu Spring 2012 collection.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) held it's 19th General Assembly session from Oct.10-Oct.13 in Korea this year and Liberia was welcomed as a new "Full Member" to the organization. Liberia's tourism sector is SLOWLY but surly on the rise.

Ok so former "The City" star Whitney Port dropped her Whitney Eve Fall 2011 line in September of this year. According to Style Bistro the fashionista states "This past [collection] was a trip that I had taken to Liberia and it was based on what I saw there and the colors that all the women were wearing and all the vibrant prints they wore. Just their surroundings made me want to do something kind of earthy but also add that pop of contemporary culture out here."

I actually had a chance to meet the starlette when she visited Liberia. Although she is uber sweet and chic I for one am not a huge fan of the line. The silhouettes are cute but I feel the colors and prints could have been a lot bolder and more "African" like what is seen at Chenai

Or as seen in the Fall/Winter 2011 collection of Boxing Kitten
